A few habits keep your dishwasher cleaning well, reduce smells, and cut the strain on pumps, heaters, and spray arms. Always follow your manufacturer’s manual for your specific model; the points below are general good practice.
Clean the filters regularly
The coarse and fine filters in the sump catch food debris. Rinse them under the tap as often as the manual recommends — usually weekly or fortnightly in busy kitchens. A clogged filter restricts water flow, causes poor wash results, and can lead to drain errors or pump stress.
Spray arms
Check that holes in the upper and lower spray arms are not blocked by seeds or plastic. Many arms unclip for rinsing through. Spin them by hand to confirm they move freely and are not fouled by tall items.
Salt and rinse aid (where fitted)
In hard-water areas, dishwasher salt protects the softener and improves cleaning. Top up when the indicator says so, using proper dishwasher salt — not table salt. Rinse aid helps drying and reduces spots on glassware; keep the reservoir filled to the maker’s level.
Loading
Do not block the detergent dispenser with a pan handle. Face soiled surfaces towards the centre. Overloading stops water reaching every item and can leave food redeposited on other pieces.
Detergent
Use the correct dose for your water hardness and soil level; too much leaves residue and can damage components over time. All-in-one tablets simplify dosing but still check the manual for short cycles or eco programmes.
Door and seals
Wipe the rubber door seal occasionally to remove grease and crumbs that cause odours or leaks at the bottom edge. Leave the door ajar after the cycle if the manual allows, so the tub dries and smells do not build.
