Beyond economical repair (often shortened to BER) is a judgement that the cost of putting the appliance back into reliable working order — parts, labour, and sometimes repeat visits — is too high relative to the value of the machine or relative to what a sensible replacement would cost. It is not the same as “cannot be fixed at any price”; in theory almost anything can be repaired if you spend enough. BER is about whether that spend is reasonable.
What goes into the decision
Typical factors include the price of parts, how much labour is involved, whether other components are worn and likely to fail next, availability of spares, and the age of the appliance. Two identical faults on two different ages of machine can lead to different conclusions.
We always quote after diagnosis — you choose
At Lothian Domestics, once we have diagnosed the fault on your appliance, we will quote what it would cost to complete the repair — whatever that figure is. We do not hide the number because it looks high, or skip quoting because we think you might not proceed. You are the one who decides whether to go ahead.
We do not withhold figures because we think the job is “not worth it” on paper. Some customers choose to spend more than the cost of a brand-new appliance to keep the one they have — for example when it matches a fitted kitchen, when stock dimensions are awkward, or when the machine has sentimental value (a family heirloom cooker, or the last purchase a relative made). Those are personal calls, and we respect them.
Ber vs “write-off” on insurance
Insurers use similar language but apply their own policy limits and cash caps. Our BER conversation is between you and us as your repairer, using our labour structure and the real parts cost — see also our article on appliance insurance.
If you decide to replace
We can still have given you clear information about what failed, which helps you choose a replacement that avoids the same pitfall. If you go ahead with a repair after seeing the quote, we complete the work to the same standard as any other job.
